Felicia Mullane, MSPT, CMTPT has over 15 years experience working in the medical field. She is a graduate of D'Youville College, Masters Physical Therapy Program. She has worked in a variety of disciplines including chronic pain management, orthopedics, pediatric and geriatric populations. Areas of specialty include women's health with focus on fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and bowel and bladder incontinence. Felicia has attended The Pittsburgh School of Pain Management in PA. She has successfully completed a National Board Certification Program in Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy. She is a certified Myofascial Trigger Point Therapist.
What is Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy?
MYO mean muscle; FASCIA (pronounced fasha) is the connective tissue that holds us together. Therefore, myofascial discomfort is pain that comes muscle. Myofascial pain accounts for as much as 85% of the pain people suffer from today. Acute and chronic myofascial pain, due to trigger points, is very common in general medical practice.
What is a Trigger Point?
A trigger point is a hyper-sensitive area in the muscle. This irritated spot, like a knot in a rubber band, causes the muscle to gradually become tighter and shorten. It prevents full range of motion and causes weakness and pain. It is called a trigger point because it often refers pain to a different area of the body.
